5 Ways to Declutter your Home Office Space

Writer: Kaye's Natural CleaningKaye's Natural Cleaning

Working from home has become the ultimate goal for many, being your own boss has its pros and cons. One of the negative things might be that the mess around the house catches your office space, and it’s making it hard for you to concentrate on your work. Here are 5 ways to declutter your home office space.

1. Make the organization a project itself.

If you’ve been neglecting the organization on your workspace you might get overwhelmed by all the mess and don’t know where or how to begin. Think about by sections, take your time and organize each space individually.

This way you’ll declutter more efficiently instead of thinking about doing it all quickly in one day.

Whether it's your desk, your cabinets, your documents, even the files on your computer, take your time to complete each section in one day. By the end of the week, you’ll be done and satisfied with the results. Remember that this is the perfect time to put away all the items that don’t belong to your workspace.

Sometimes we think some decorative items will brighten up the room, but the truth is they end up being visual distractions. The best decoration is a clean and organized office, color is your friend and there’s no need to be afraid of it, but those little statues and flower vases belong to the living room.

2. The more space you save the better.

This one might seem a little obvious but let us explain it a little better. We already talked about getting rid of items that don’t belong to your home office, now it’s time to invest in items that help you organize them. One of the best ways of decluttering space is to get some cabinet-like-baskets, you might remember these from our previous article about spring cleaning in 2020. These cabinets help you use the vertical space in your office, you’ll be able to store documents, materials, and so on the best possible way, and with the help of some labels you’ll always find what you need in no time.

Another way to save some storage space is to digitize all of your documents. If you have a lot of files and folder laying around and you don’t know what to do with them because they might come handy every once a while, try digitizing them and saving them on a cloud. This way you’ll have them secure and ready whenever you need them without wasting any space.

3. Use your walls.

Right alongside saving space is important to use every space you have efficiently. Floating shelves are very useful to store the items you don’t use regularly but you still need them handy. You can also hang a whiteboard or a calendar to remind you of all the deadlines, appointments, and general errand you need to do. For those who work with crafts, having a magnetic bar on your wall will be useful for hanging your scissors to free some desk space.

Remember there’s always a creative and efficient way to use more space.

4. Make your own system.

Being your own boss means you can also choose how to manage things in your own office. Whether you’d prefer drawers over bins or vice-versa, build up your own system and put like with like. Gather folder with folder, pens with pens, and so on, wherever you think it’ll work better for you.

Visualize yourself in the space and think whether you’d prefer your notepads close to you or maybe organized alongside your books. Will you need your desk empty for reading or making crafts or would it be ok with some organizers on top. These are things that only you can decide, remember that it’ll be you sitting there everyday working, what’s best for you is also the best for your work.

5. Keep up the good work.

Don’t let your hard work go to waste, do your best to keep things clean and organized. Remember yourself that everything has its place and that you carefully thought that space. Be proud about what you did and enjoy the view of a decluttered home office space, this way you’ll be more likely to maintain it like that. If you see some loose papers or an item out of place, don’t leave it for later. It will only take you a minute to put it back where it belongs, but organizing your office all over again won’t.
